Don’t Let the Disability Company Claim Long Hauler’s Symptoms are All in Your Head

What is Long Hauler’s Syndrome (LHS)?

Long Hauler’s Syndrome (LHS) is a term coined by medical professionals in the past year to describe the deleterious effects experienced by individuals who either have tested positive for COVID-19 or were exposed to COVID-19 and suffer debilitating symptoms long after that.  The symptoms range and impact numerous bodily systems, such as the heart, neurological, blood, lungs, and head, to name a few.  People tell their physicians they experience extreme fatigue, brain fog, becoming out of breath easily, and tingling and shock sensations in their arms, legs, hands, feet, back and neck. Despite the range of symptoms which seemingly have no connection, several commonalities exist among those who suffer from symptoms: (1) they linger for weeks, months and years; (2) they prevent them from performing their livelihood and daily activities; and (3) no physician of any specialty has been able to figure out how to make them go away.

LHS Suffering May be Disregarded by Medical Professionals and Insurance Companies

LHS is a nightmare for those suffering the ill effects of symptoms that lurk and attack with no warning.  Sufferers seeking answers and relief are bounced back and forth between their primary care physicians, neurologists, cardiologists, rheumatologists and pulmonologists, only to be told to try “this,” and if that doesn’t work, try “that.”  Some people are told to seek mental health treatment when nothing else works.  Such a suggestion is a slap in the face to those who feel disregarded as having a condition “that is all in their head.”

Individuals insured under disability insurance policies making a claim for LHS are at risk of being on the receiving end of a claim denial.  At best, disability insurers will assign a mental health label to their condition which most group disability policies limit benefits to a maximum of 24 months.
